The Basics

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an obligatory charity that purifies wealth and supports those in need.

Who Must Pay Zakat?

Every Muslim who owns wealth above the Nisab threshold for one lunar year and has assets beyond basic needs.

Eligible Recipients

Zakat is distributed to the poor, needy, debt-ridden, and other categories mentioned in Qur'an 9:60.

Threshold & Rate

Nisab Threshold

Nisab is commonly based on either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend using the silver standard because it benefits more people.
